Planning and Development Services (PDS) seeks to improve the health of our local economy at the regional and local level through various initiatives. For example, we are responsible for developing and implementing a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for our five county region. As a result, our agency is able to apply for federal funds to help with development proposals that create jobs and bring significant private investment dollars into our area. PDS is also available to member local governments to write EDA Public Works grants for projects that create and/or retain jobs and provide private sector investment.
The Department has also helped our local communities in accessing other grant funds from the Rural Center, GoldenLEAF, and CDBG, for example. Current projects include coordinating a regional Brownfields Assessment Coalition of nine local government jurisdictions and assisting the Town of Whitakers with their revitalization efforts through the NC STEP program.
